The Promise of the Holy Spirit (Jan 2-3)

The Promise of the Holy Spirit (Jan 2-3)

December 31, 2020

Last weekend, we learned that even as a newborn baby, Jesus was recognized as the King God had promised to send. He grew up to serve many people as their leader, teacher, healer, and Lord. He performed many miracles and He suffered and died on the cross to pay for the sins of the world. Then, God raised Him from the dead.

Just before Jesus was taken up into heaven, He promised to send the Holy Spirit to give power to the apostles, the twelve disciples Jesus chose to be His first witnesses.

When you sit at home: Read Acts 1:3-11. Jesus told His apostles to wait in Jerusalem for the gift of the Holy Spirit. The book of Acts is about the acts of the apostles who used the power of the Holy Spirit to do amazing things in building God’s church. The Holy Spirit gives us the power we need to be witnesses to the world of who God is and what He has done. What have you learned about God that you could tell others?

When you walk along the road: The apostles waited for the gift Jesus promised because they knew the Lord always keeps His promises. What other promises has God given us? How can remembering those promises encourage you and keep you strong in your faith?

When you lie down: Pray this prayer each day this week: “Lord, thank You for sending Your gift of the Holy Spirit. Help us to wait for the gifts You have for us as we trust You to keep Your promises. Amen.”

When you get up: This year in children’s church we are going to learn about the promises God has made to us in the Bible. Find a shoe box or similar container, decorate it, and create a “God’s Promises” box for your family. Each time you hear one of God’s promises, write or draw it on a piece of paper and place it in your box. You can open it any time to remember God’s promises to us. Plan special family times when your family will read the promises together and remember God always keeps His promises!
