We are learning about the Spirit who gives us power. In Acts 6, we read how the Spirit gave Stephen the power to be a faithful servant.
When you sit at home: Ages 3-Kindergarten read Acts 6:1-8. Grades 1-5 read Acts 6:5a, 8, 15; 7:54-60. Grades 4-5 also Acts 8:1-3. How did God help Stephen?
Grade school parents: Your student may have questions about today’s story. The Holy Spirit gave Stephen the power to overcome any fear he may have had. Knowing God’s Word is a tool God gives us to overcome our fears. Here are some verses your family can read together. Choose one to write out and hang in your home where the family will see it.
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33
“Dear friends, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that has come on you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice inasmuch as you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when His glory is revealed. If you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you.” 1 Peter 4:12-14
“Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” Matthew 5:10-12
“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? And if you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.” Matthew 5:43-48
When you walk along the road: Acts 6:5 says Stephen was “a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit.” What do you think that means? What would it be like to have people talk about you as a person full of faith and the Holy Spirit?
When you lie down: Pray this prayer each day this week: “Thank You, Lord, for filling Stephen with Your Spirit. Fill us with Your Holy Spirit in that same way so we may serve others and defend the faith. Amen.”
When you get up: Choose a way your family can serve others like Stephen did or read this family devotional about the persecuted church. Commit to pray as a family for those who are persecuted for their faith.
