Jesus Teaches the Beatitudes (Feb 15-16)

February 13, 2020

This weekend in children’s church, we begin learning about Jesus as “The King Who Serves.” Ages 3-K will hear how Jesus taught the people about mercy and forgiveness. Grades 1-5 will read from the Beatitudes and hear how Jesus taught the crowds about God’s blessings.

When you sit at home: Ages 3-K read Matthew 5:1-2, 7. Grades 1-5 read Matthew 5:1-12. On the mountainside, Jesus taught that those who show mercy to others will be shown mercy by God. To show mercy means to forgive. God blesses us when we forgive. To be blessed means to have real joy and happiness. When have you been blessed by forgiving someone? When have you been blessed by someone forgiving you?

When you walk along the road: Jesus said, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God (Matthew 5:9). To be at peace means to be content, to not be quarreling with others. Peacemakers help bring peace to the people they know. God calls us to be peacemakers. How could you be a peacemaker with your friends or family?

When you lie down: Pray this prayer each day this week: “Lord, thank You for forgiving us. Please help us to forgive those who have hurt us. Help us to follow Your commandments by loving You and loving others. Amen.”

When you get up: The Beatitudes remind us of the two greatest commandments: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength,” and “Love your neighbor as yourself” (Mark 12:30-31). Brainstorm a way your family can show love to God and others today.
