Advent 4: An Angel Visits the Shepherds (Dec 21-22)

Advent 4: An Angel Visits the Shepherds (Dec 21-22)

December 19, 2019

It is the fourth week of Advent and Christmas is almost here. Advent helps us get our hearts ready to celebrate the coming of Jesus. This weekend in children’s church, we are reading the story of when God sent an angel to announce the birth of Jesus to the shepherds. We are reminded that the good news of Jesus’birth is for all people.

When you sit at home: Age 3-Grade 2 read Luke 2:8-16. Grades 3-5 read Luke 2:8-18. The angel shared the good news of Jesus’ birth. The shepherds shared the good news with those they knew. Why was this good news?

Ages 4-K Whisper Verse: “Glory to God in the highest.”

When you walk along the road: Why do you think God chose shepherds to be the first ones to hear the good news? (At that time, people didn’t think much of shepherds. They were often dirty, smelly, and some of them were dishonest. God may have chosen them to remind us that He loves everyone and that the good news is for everyone who believes.)

When you lie down: Pray this prayer each day this week: “Lord, thank You for coming near to the shepherds on that special night. Thank You for coming near to everyone during this Christmas season and throughout the year. Amen.”

When you get up: Enjoy an evening outdoors. Look at the night sky and the stars and imagine what the shepherds saw and heard that night. The heavenly host praised God; the shepherds glorified and praised God for all they had seen and heard. Take turns finishing this sentence, “Glory to God in the highest. I praise God for ___.”
