As we read John 1:1-18, we see John writing in verses 1-4, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” Jesus created all things. Colossians 1:16 states, “ For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.”
John further writes in verse 14, “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.” Unfortunately many miss this most important gift. They either reject or don’t recognize Jesus.
So that we receive this most important gift of the Christmas season—Jesus, John teaches us critical, foundational information about Jesus in the beginning of his Gospel.
John wanted to communicate and be crystal clear exactly who Jesus is.
We can be thankful for John’s clarity since through the ages there have been many false beliefs about Jesus. Here are a few examples of these false beliefs which John refuted in the first chapter of the Gospel of John. One false belief, Arianism, believed that Jesus was not coeternal with God. Another false belief, Sabellianism taught that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit were different aspects of one God and there was no distinction of the three distinct persons who are in the Trinity. Another example of false beliefs were the Socinians which taught that Jesus was only man and not God.
It is also interesting to think about the contrast that John makes in this passage concerning life, light and darkness. John states in 1:9, “ In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”
Throughout the Bible the contrast between light and darkness is illustrated. In Genesis 1:3-4 we see how, “God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness.” Isaiah 9:2 shares that “The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned.” Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12).
In this passage, John 1:1-18, John teaches that Jesus is life and that Jesus’ life is the light of all mankind.
Additionally, it is interesting to think for a bit about how light shines. As we turn on a light in a dark room the light takes over. We can see. If we turn on more lights we can see even more. Just as John shares, we know that darkness cannot overtake the light in a room that is lit up. How critical it is for us to see how Jesus is both the life and light of our world.
Jesus wants us to be light in our world. He wants us to be born again. He wants to give us eternal life when we have faith and believe in Him. He wants us to share this wonderful gift of believing in Jesus Christ with others. John 1 5:13 states, “I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.”
In Matthew 5:14-16, Jesus teaches even more about light. Jesus says, “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glory your Father in heaven.”
As we reflect on making room for the most important gift, who is Jesus, we know we will never be able to shine perfectly like Jesus did. But we can be a reflection of Jesus as we live our lives glorifying God, sharing our faith with others, and participating in God’s mission not only at Christmas but everyday.
Simple Christmas involves a supernatural birth brought about by a simple faith. We need to make room for the most important gift of all—Jesus.
John 1:1-18
In the beginning was the Word….
He was coming into the world….
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us…
Some miss this most important gift….
But to all who did receive Him, the most important gift, He gave them the right to be children of God, to those who believe in his name….
Simple Christmas involves a spiritual birth brought about by a simple faith.
Jesus' birth will bring a new creation.
Jesus' birth will move in a new direction.
Jesus' birth will embody a new reflection.
As we are crafted more into His image, we offer the world a reflection of Him.
We live with Jesus
We live under Him
We live like Him
As followers of Jesus we live with Him, under Him, and like Him as we reflect His image. We experience the presence and glory of God who is the King who sits on His throne. We look forward to living eternally with God. (“I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.” 1 John 5:13)
Here is a key question. Are you a believer in Jesus Christ? Have you been born again? Have you experienced a supernatural birth brought about by a simple faith? Jesus himself said, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit.
You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’” (John 3:5-7).
This Christmas make room for the most important gift of all—Jesus.
Christmas is a time when we celebrate the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ. During this week, think about doing something that would be a simple way that you could reflect God’s light to the world around you which is in darkness. Might there be someone God places in your path who needs a kind word, a note of encouragement, or an errand run? Is there someone you could invite to come to the Northland Christmas Eve Worship Services? Might you be able to help volunteer and Serve on Christmas Eve?
Lord, let us reflect on how we can live a simple Christmas which involves a supernatural birth brought about by a simple faith. Help us to see that just as Jesus was born to be the light to the world, we also are called to be God’s light to those who are around us. Give us opportunities to be loving and caring as we are called to be on your mission to redeem people from our neighborhoods and from the nations. Help us to be bold as we have opportunities to share our faith with those around us who desperately need to know about Jesus and how much He loves the world and wants to be their Lord and Savior. As we receive presents for Christmas, remind us to be thankful for the greatest gift of all, Jesus Christ, who is the Word, the Good News, the true reason for the Christmas season.
Simple Christmas: Making Room for the Most Important Gift
The Christmas season is upon us. Many, if not most, see the Christmas season as the song says, “the most wonderful time of the year.” While it may be the most wonderful time, Christmas isn’t known as a time people slow down but rather speed up—especially in American culture. We have shopping to do and parties to attend. In addition, many are finishing up a year of work and projects. Furthermore, many deal with the strong emotions the Christmas season brings—either missing a family member who has passed or dealing with family drama. Therefore, the Christmas season is anything but simple for the masses.
In our series, Simple Christmas, we are encouraging, challenging, and inviting people to make room for the most important gift.

In our series, Simple Christmas, we are encouraging, challenging, and inviting people to make room for the most important gift. The most important gift ever given to humanity was Jesus. Jesus was and is God’s gift to the world. The Christmas season marks the time where Christians celebrate the incarnation—when God became man and dwelt among us. With all the busyness of work, play, and family, we want to carve out five weeks to challenge us with why, what, and how saints long ago made room for the most important gift—and thus exemplify for us today how we, too, can have a simple Christmas.
